The department was founded in 1944 at the Kyiv Automobile and Road Institute (KADI) (since September 2000 – the National Transport University (NTU)).

The history of the department began with teachers – engineer-warriors who went through the Great Patriotic War and worked on the reconstruction of destroyed bridges. In 1945, Yevgeny Yakovych Berger, a military engineer of the 3rd rank, was sent to work at KADI as a senior lecturer of the department. In 1948, military engineers of the 2nd rank Oleksandr Andriyovych Dronov and Serhiy Mykolayovych Kovalenko began working at the department.

They teach bridge courses, conduct course and diploma design, scientific work not only at the department of bridges, but also at the department of military training. Subsequently, they defended theses, became candidates of technical sciences, associate professors. It was they who laid the foundation of the scientific potential of the modern department of bridges, tunnels and hydraulic structures, and educated the first generation of young scientists and teachers of the department.

The heads of the department, which was then called “Bridges and Tunnels”, were: during 1944–1949 – Dr. Tech. of Sciences, Professor Pikovsky A.O., during 1949–1952 candidate technical of Sciences, associate professor Y.D. Livshyts, from 1952 to 1956 – Dr. Tech. Sciences, Professor M.I. Tovstolis. Starting from 1956, for 28 years, until the last day of his life, the head of the department was Dr. Tech. Sciences, professor Y.D. Livshyts. In 1984, the department was headed by candidate technical of Sciences, associate professor M.M. Onishchenko, during 1984–1986 – Dr. Tech. Science, Professor O.O. Rasskazov. From 1987 to 2002 – Dr. Tech. Sciences, Professor V.O. Bolshakov, and from 2002 to 2019, Dr. Tech. Sciences, Professor S.G. Tkachuk. From 2019 to the present, the Department of Bridges, Tunnels and Hydrotechnical Structures is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Artur Mykolayovych Onishchenko.

The team of the Department of Bridges, Tunnels and Hydrotechnical Structures offers scientific support services in the following areas:

  • Washouts and channel reshaping at bridge crossings.
  • Hydrological and hydraulic calculations of bridges, pipes and small artificial structures.
  • Bitumens modified with various types of polymers. Obtaining binders with increased characteristics and extending the service life of road materials based on them by 1.5-3 times.
  • Asphalt concrete based on bitumen modified with polymers. Increasing the durability of the road surface and extending the service life between repairs.
  • Crushed mastic asphalt concrete on bitumen modified with polymers. Provides an opportunity to build upper layers of road clothing with increased roughness, crack resistance, shear resistance, and water and frost resistance. Layers can be arranged on both hard and soft road clothing. Simplified construction technology.
  • Poured asphalt concrete on bitumen modified with polymers. Increases the waterproofing capacity and durability of the road surface.
  • Mastics on bitumen modified with polymers for filling temperature joints and cracks. Restore the integrity and tightness of the coating. Timely application extends the service life of the road surface by 1.5-2 times.
  • Bitumen emulsions. Development and testing of the composition and modes of preparation and application of bituminous emulsions, as well as materials, technologies and layers based on them (pit repair, surface treatment, wear layers, etc.).
  • Reuse of “old” asphalt concrete. Rational use of resources, energy saving, improvement of environmental safety.
  • Development of asphalt-cement compositions. It involves carrying out work on the road by loosening the existing organo-mineral road surface materials with a special machine, mixing them with cement or cement-sand mixture, moistening, leveling and compacting with rollers. Asphalt cement layers have increased strength and shear resistance.
  • Development of modern waterproofing materials in the form of rolled polymer bitumen waterproofing for roadways of bridges, overpasses and other transport structures.
  • Assessment of the technical condition of road clothing with the determination of the necessary volumes of work during repairs or reconstruction.
  • Development of original methods and devices for testing road construction materials to determine:

– thermal crack resistance of asphalt concrete;
– resistance to rutting;
– endurance and fatigue;
– durability;
– thermodilatometric characteristics;
– thermomechanical and thermorheological characteristics (modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, relaxation function, creep function, function of temperature-time analogy, function of long-term strength, etc.).

  • Development of a resource-saving technology for the production of concrete and reinforced concrete products based on the use of highly effective chemical additives. Allows you to save cement costs by 10-20%, reduce energy costs by 20-25%, and improve the physical and mechanical properties of cement concrete.
  • Development of cement concrete road surface repair technology. It allows to improve the quality of repairs, increase the strength of concrete, and reduce the repair time.
  • Research, verification and analysis of industrial waste (salt waste) for use in road construction as anti-icing substances, accelerators and retarders of concrete hardening.
  • Development of the composition of soil-cement mixtures with reduced cement content based on chemical and metallurgical industry waste. Saves cement.
  • Production of building materials from low-cement and cement-free materials based on industrial waste by hot and cold pressing. Allows to improve physical and mechanical properties of building materials and save cement.
  • Conducting an examination of the quality of construction materials and issuing a conclusion. Determination of compliance of materials with the requirements of DSTU, technical conditions and other standards.

Training of scientific personnel. There are 36 graduate students in the department’s postgraduate program.

Technical Committee 321 “Bridge Construction” works on the basis of the department, whose field of activity is the standardization of technical aspects in the following areas: metal structures for the construction of bridges and pipes, technologies for the construction of bridges and pipes, technologies for work on new construction, reconstruction and overhaul of bridges and pipes.
