Maria Petrivna Kirkevych — the Head at the Department of Physical Education and Sports, Merited Worker of Physical Education and Sport, Merited Master of Sport of the USSR in handball, the Olympic champion of 1976 in Montreal, silver and bronze medalist of the world championships 1975, 1973, seven-time winner of the European Champions Cup, 10-time champion of the USSR in the team “Spartak” Kyiv, winner of the 5th (1971) and 6th (1975) Olympics of the Peoples of the USSR, an Honorary Citizen of Kyiv. She was awarded the medal of “Merit for Labor” and the Honorary Certificate of the Supreme Council of Ukraine in 1976, the Order of Princess Olga, III degree. She has been working at National Transport University since 1982.

 

The Department of Physical Education and Sports was founded in 1944 as a structural unit of the Automobile and Road Institute.

The first head of the department was Illia Mykhailovych Kanter from 1944 to 1954. From 1954 to 1955, the head of the department was Yevhenii Oleksandrovych Rakov. The Department of Physical Education and Sports was headed by Heorhii Vlasovych Kozyr from 1955 to 1986.

In 1971 the KAHI Sports Complex was built, where the Department of Physical Education and Sports has been located since then.

In 1986 – 1987, Eduard Mykhailovych Snastin, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences was the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports. From 1988 to 1989, Anatolii Andriiovych Dryzheruk, Merited Master of Sports, was the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports.

From 1989 to 2005, Borys Oleksiiovych Semybratskyi, Associate Professor was the Head of the Department. Leonid Yukhymovych Bratkovskyi, Merited Motocross Coach of Ukraine, Master of Sports of the USSR, Associate Professor, worked at the Department for more than 30 years. He trained 27 masters of sports.

In the educational process, the Department of Physical Education and Sports carries out classes within the credit-module program framework: athletic gymnastics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, mini football, table tennis, badminton, weight sport, light athletics and cross training.
