Yuriy Feodosiyovych Hutarevych – the Head of the Department, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, honoured science and technology worker of Ukraine, State Prize winner of Ukraine in science and technology, Academician of the Transport Academy of Ukraine.

Engines and Heating Engineering Department was founded in 1962. The founder of the department and its first head was the Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Petro Ivanovych Andrusenko, an outstanding scientist in the field of engines, fuel injection systems of diesel engines. Since the foundation of the department, the work on the formation of its material base began. As a result of the preparatory work, a research laboratory for engines and diesel fuel equipment was established. In 1966 five electric test stands were installed for testing engines and eight installations for conducting laboratory works in heating engineering. From 1975 to 1987, Professor K. Y. Dolganov was the head of Thermodynamics and Engines Department. During this period the material base of the department was substantially strengthened. For the training of the academic staff at the department, postgraduate courses were opened in 1962, and in 1970 – doctoral studies.

The department trains bachelors and masters in: “Power Engineering”, “Industrial Engineering”, “Automobile transport”; “Ecology”, “Applied Mechanics”, “Vocational Education (Transport)” specialties.

The Main Research Areas at the Department:

The main direction of the scientific activity of the department since its establishment is to increase the technical and economical ratio of automobile and tractor engines by developing the fundamentally new power systems and automatic regulation systems of these engines. In recent years the department has been conducting researches in the field of alternative fuel sources usage.

In recent years, scientific research has been aimed at solving urgent problems in Ukraine related to:

  • Systems of automatic control and ICE regulation;
  • Improvement of ICE starting qualities in conditions of low ambient air temperature;
  • Investigations of alternative fuels and their additives to feed the ICE.
  • A system development for fuel economy and environmental indicators of transport engines monitoring and directions for improving these parameters under operation conditions.
